USCIS Redesigns Permanent Resident Cards & Employment Authorization Documents

A UCLA Gold swatch.

USCIS announced new tamper-resistant designs for Form I-551 Permanent Resident Cards (PRC), also known as Green Cards, and Form I-766 Employment Authorization Documents (EADs). USCIS began issuing the redesigned cards on January 30, 2023.

Some PRC and EADs issued after January 30 may still display the former design. Both versions of the cards are acceptable for Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification and E-Verify.

Validity

The introduction of new card designs does not invalidate previously issued cards. The following cards are valid PRC documents:

  • New tamper-resistant cards
  • Previously issued cards with current expiration dates
  • Older PRC without a listed expiration date

Individuals will receive a notification (such as through an automatic extension of the validity period of the PRC or EAD as indicated on a Form I-797 Notice of Action or in a Federal Register notice) should their card become invalid.

Examples

Please see the USCIS news release to learn more. Go to the Form I-9 Acceptable Documents page on I-9 Central and Section 12.1 of the Handbook for Employers (M-274) to see examples of the new card designs.
